A chemical peel is a non-invasive procedure in which the top layers of skin are removed, which results in a smoother look. This procedure is typically performed on the face to treat wrinkles, scars or skin discoloration to help you achieve your ideal look.
Am I a Candidate for a Chemical Peel?
Your doctor will help determine if this is the right procedure for you. You may be unable to receive a chemical peel if:
- You’re pregnant.
- You have a family history of keloids.
- You have frequent or severe cold sore outbreaks.
- You’ve taken the oral acne medication isotretinoin in the last six months.
How Do Chemical Peels Work?
During a chemical peel, a solution is applied to your skin to remove the damaged outer layers. There are three types of chemicals used, depending on the extent of your procedure. Our provider will help you decide which procedure will be best for your needs.
- Alpha hydroxy acid is used for light chemical peels, which only remove the outer layer of skin.
- Trichloroacetic acid is used for medium chemical peels, which removes the outer and upper layers of the middle layer, known as the dermis.
- Phenol is used for deep chemical peels, which penetrates down to the lowest layers of skin. Deep chemical peels often involve pretreatment with medication like Retin A to prepare your skin and facilitate the healing process.
Light chemical peels can be repeated weekly for six weeks, and medium chemicals can be repeated every six to 12 months to maintain the results. Deep chemical peels require a longer recovery time.
Are There Risks with Chemical Peels?
Side effects vary based on the chemical solution and may include burning, stinging, swelling and discomfort. Your doctor will thoroughly review any potential side effects of your specific procedure.
What Can I Expect After a Chemical Peel?
Your immediate results will also depend on which procedure you receive. A light chemical peel’s results may be subtle but can increase with multiple treatments. Skin will be significantly smoother with medium and deep chemical peels.
Your doctor will discuss typical results and how to care for your skin after a chemical peel. Our team is here to answer any questions that may arise during the process and as you recover.
